The Lolita Effect: Media and the Sexy Girl

"How can I raise my daughters to have high self-esteem?"

"What"s the best way to talk about sexuality with young girls and boys?"

"How can we combat images of the sexy girl in today"s media?"

We live in a culture where primetime shows feature underage sex and sexual violence, toddlers play with dolls dressed in miniskirts and fishnets, and teenage girls undergo surgery to achieve Barbie-doll body types. How do we help our young girls – and boys – navigate through these sexual images and stereotypes?

The public is invited to join The Women"s Connection on February 26, noon, QC Waterfront Convention Center at the Isle of Capri, Bettendorf, for a luncheon event featuring University of Iowa Professor and author Dr. Gigi Durham, on "Media and the Sexy Girl." Cost is $18 for members, $20 for non-members. This event is sponsored by Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus.

For more than a decade, Dr. Gigi Durham has conducted research on adolescents and the media, and she is committed to advocating for the rights of girls and women worldwide. Dr. Durham will identify five core myths of sexuality found in mainstream media targeted at children and adolescents, and she"ll provide clear strategies for parents and adults to work with children to recognize, understand and resist the consequences of these trends. Don"t miss out on this important discussion.
