Japanese film on child prostitution pulled from Thai film festival

A controversial Japanese film on child prostitution and human trafficking in Thailand has been pulled from the Bangkok International Film Festival in the face of opposition from festival organizers, film production sources confirmed Monday. While drawing increasing interest in Japan, the film, titled ‘‘Children of the Dark’’ in English, ‘‘handles too touchy issues and cannot be screened in view of the country’s public sentiment,’’ the sources quoted the organizers as saying in mid-September.

The eight-day festival, sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and other entities, is scheduled to run from Tuesday. The organizers are also accusing the makers of the film—called ‘‘Yami no Kodomotachi’’ in Japanese—of shooting it in Thailand without authorization, the sources said, although the filmmakers have denied the allegation and stressed that they secured proper authorization in advance. Festival organizers picked the film—starring popular Japanese actors Yosuke Eguchi and Aoi Miyazaki—in August.

The film was released in Japan in early August at only seven theaters. It gradually came to public attention and has received rave reviews. More than 100 theaters across Japan have decided to show it next year.
